FAQ
-
How much does stump grinding cost?
Our jobs start at a $150 base price for stump grinding. Most single stumps in the Metro Detroit area range from $150 to $400 depending on size, location, and access. Larger projects with multiple stumps are quoted on-site for accuracy.
-
What’s included in the $150 minimum?
The $150 covers mobilization, safety setup, and stump grinding down to a standard depth. Final pricing adjusts based on stump size, access, and job complexity.
-
How deep do you grind stumps?
We grind generally 6–16 inches below ground level—suitable for replanting grass or landscaping. Do you need something more substantial for future projects, such as patios or tree replanting? Just let us know.
-
What happens to the wood chips after grinding?
Wood chips are left neatly piled or spread over the hole. Many homeowners reuse them as mulch, or let them break down naturally. Hauling chips away isn’t part of the standard service but can be arranged separately.
-
Can you access stumps in tight areas?
Yes. Our compact, tracked Vermeer SC70TX grinder is designed to fit through most gates and operate in tight yards, minimizing lawn damage.
-
Why remove a stump instead of leaving it?
Stumps can attract pests, cause regrowth, become trip hazards, and dull mower blades. Grinding removes those hazards and helps restore the usability and appearance of your yard.
-
Do I need to call Miss Dig before you grind my stump?
We take care of it. Once your job is scheduled, Stumpocalypse will contact Miss Dig 811 and open a ticket so public utility lines can be marked before we begin. This helps us work safely without interrupting your services.
Miss Dig only marks public utilities. It does not mark private lines, including
• In-ground sprinkler systems
• Invisible dog fences
• Low-voltage landscape lighting
• Gas lines for pool heaters or outdoor grillsWhat we need from you
Please flag or point out any private lines before we start. While we take precautions, Stumpocalypse is not responsible for damage to unmarked private lines.Timing note
Miss Dig typically requires about three full business days for marking in Michigan, so this can affect how soon we can complete the job. -
Will there be a big hole or a mess left behind?
We keep it tidy. Stump grinding produces chips that mix with soil and help fill the space. We rake and level the area so it’s neat and ready for topsoil and seed. Because wood expands when ground, there is usually a small mound of mulch left over that you can use in beds or move easily.
-
Can you handle large jobs with many stumps?
Yes. Stumpocalypse is equipped to handle large, high-volume stump grinding projects and can efficiently remove many stumps on a single property in one visit. We specialize in stump removal after trees have already been cleared and are well-suited for properties with numerous or oversized stumps, including those left well above ground. If stumps are what remain after land clearing or tree service work, we can typically complete the job quickly and efficiently.
